Mashable reported on IBM’s predictions of brain-machine interface going mainstream within 5 years. It’ s a wonderful vision! But from the other side it’s a horror. If you read my post about the threats of introducing Siri – which uses our sense of hearing instead of vision, then you know where I’m going with this. And you probably realized…the horror, the horror…
Whereas my frights on Siri concerned mostly the problem with filtering the vast amount of data received by users and eliminating the user in the choice process. This IBM news gave me some more disturbing thoughts. It’s not about your lack of options in surfing the Internet and organizing your day through Siri anymore. It’s about the data you give it away.
Why was Siri released in Beta mode? It’s rare for Apple to release unprepared products… Because they needed more data for the Siri AI to work properly. And this data collecting scares the s… out of me. Again I’m being pessimistic, paranoid etc. etc. But know this: your voice can tell them(for an example Apple) very much about you.
- Are you nervous(if yes, then in what localization)?
- Other feelings(again, WHERE did they occur)?
Yep, all this information and much, much more can be acquired just by analyzing your voice properly. And it can be sold to advertisers, or given to the government, sold on the black market…it doesn’t matter, what matters is that somebody will know that much about you. Still like the idea of Siri? Apple isn’t very strong at ads, but this can change a lot, as soon as they start using Siri for gathering real user data for advertisers. Remember that user data is also about quality, not only quantity.
Now imagine this: Siri is just a simple toy. It has no data gathering value compared to Mind-Reading Computers. What they can do? How much data will those interfaces be able to acquire, when people will be using them? Your souls darkest secrets, won’t be protected from these interfaces. Your whole behaviour will be known to them. The possibilities are endless if someone knows your thoughts.
Ads? Don’t even think about ignoring some ad, as soon as you do IT WILL KNOW.
All this is very disturbing in the era of a not so free Internet.
